T
his hotel is as close as you can get to history in Kaleiçi. It is just opposite the “Broken Minaret”, which is in fact a substantial structure, whose foundations date back to the 2nd century. A Byzantine basilica was erected on top in the 5th century, before being turned into the Korkud mosque in the 16th century. It later burned down, along with most of the city. Villa Verde is a modern conversion of an old Antalya house. More open, more airy than traditional Kaleiçi houses, it is built, like most of them, on ancient ruins. The owners, Ali and his Japanese wife Mitsuyo, have turned their garden into a mini-open museum. In the comfortable rooms, the style is contemporary with a touch of Japanese precision. Watching the sun set over the basilica from the terrace is a delight without equal.
