or most visitors, the Bodrum Peninsula is all about being beside the sea. However, as development increasingly robs the resorts of their character a few people have chosen, like the Işıks, to retreat to the inland hills where they can savour the sea views without having to jostle the summer hordes.
Gürece straddles a crossroads on the way to Gümüşlük and Turgutreis. In the upper village is the petite Rüya (Dream) Hotel, where Mr Işık and his wife, both trained architects, have created four elegant bedrooms to go with a bistro-style breakfast room and a diminutive pool; the barrel vaults of the bedrooms echo the shape of ancient cisterns that dot the peninsula. Several secretive terraces offer panoramic views over outlying islands; should the views ever pall a library of videos and games awaits.
Mr Işık is a charming, effusive host who spent many years promoting Turkish tourism in the UK. He is more than happy to outline the walking trails that criss-cross the hills above his home.

We (2 families, 9 persons) have stayed in Villa Ruya, Gureece, Bodrum for 7 perfects days and nights. Mr. & Mrs. Zuhal - Iskender Isik and their employee - Sanjeen gave us a real feeling of home. They are very friendly and kind, always served us with a big smile. With their advice and guide we traveled around the area to the beaches, restaurants and other interesting places. The place is just perfect - comfortable and beautiful rooms; perfect swimming pool and Jacuzzi, excellent view of the sea, beautiful garden and splendid terrace were we had daily delicious rich breakfasts. Tasty salads and pizza’s served near the pool or in the terrace made it perfect as interim meals. The place is away from the noisy - too touristic Bodrum but close enough to enjoy it (only 20 minutes by car). Our vacation was beyond our expectations thank to the people who runs the hotel. Ruya pansiyon is definitely one of the best homely small hotels we have ever been. For us it was a great relaxing, enjoyable vacation; we would be more than happy to stay there again…. Thank you, Yair Sasson
