A
ntakya is one of the most colourful and yet undiscovered regions of Turkey. In the past decade, several old buildings have been renovated and turned into attractive hotels. The Liwan is one of them. The house draws from an eclectic range of architectural styles. It was built in the 1920s as a residence for Syria’s first head of state, who was in fact a Turk, graduate of the famous Galatasaray Lycee. When his 13-year adventure in Syria came to an end, he returned briefly to this house before moving to Istanbul. A sizeable investment returned this old mansion to its former glory. Crystal chandeliers, carved bed frames, velvet chairs and a piano in the lobby recreate the atmosphere of Antakya, as it was 90 years ago.
