T
he northern shore of the Gulf of Saros remains a surprisingly calm backwater. There are no towns to speak of this side of Enez, just a few simple fishermens shelters, and the abominables have not made much headway. The sea is supposed to be a divers paradise.
The harbour of İbrice, which will be destroyed if a proposed Black Sea oil pipeline is laid here, now consists of two lokantas, a boat shelter and a jandarma point, backed by miles and miles of pine forest. The Retreat lies about 2 kms inland, outside the sleepy village of Mecidiye. It started out as a diving camp with a friendly restaurant attached to it, and then grew by stages into something more substantial as all sorts of people other than divers found it a congenial weekend haven from the city blues. It has a mixed bag of rooms that include a cosy private cottage, a few rooms that make a half-hearted attempt at modishness, and several tree houses of very basic standards. The restaurant offers good honest fare and a wide wine list.
A lovely, underused beach lies within a 5-minute drive (or, better, a 20-minute walk).
