C omfortable, highly elegant hotel set in a converted soap factory in historic Antakya. The neighbourhood is grimy. But once past the gate into the vast courtyard, one enters a different world. Marble and gilt, crystal and inlay have been used with somewhat Oriental abandon. The staff is highly professional, and includes veterans of the best hotels of the country. The style is more like that of a 5-starred city hotel than most other hotels covered in this guide. But both the relatively small number of rooms and the highly individual elegance of the decor justifies its inclusion among the best small hotels of Turkey.
Antakya is the ancient Antioch, which played crucial parts in both Roman and Christian history as the capital of Roman Syria. The Old City retains much of its historic character with its narrow alleys, pungent bazaar smells and quaint mix of religious and ethnic communities. The Museum houses one of the worlds leading collections of Roman mosaics.
