O rtahisar is an interesting village in Cappadocia. The rock mass at its heart has more holes than Swiss cheese and was perhaps among the world’s first “apartment buildings”.

Satrapia - an old Persian word for governorate - was dreamed up by the Turhan family. The father, Alaattin Turhan, served as governor in Nevşehir between 2003-2006, fell in love with the region, bought land and built a house for himself and his wife. Their architect children then suggested developing the plot. In the course of excavations, ancient living units were discovered. After 7 years, the project was completed. Six beautiful and different units form a small neighbourhood with 29 rooms, 9 of them carved out of the rock. The units, opening onto a small garden, are like little homes. The rooms are warm and cheerful decorated with colourful fabrics.
