A
small cave house hidden in a back street of stone-age Ürgüp is the setting for aesthetically the most intensive of the hotels listed in this book. Seven darkly hued rooms surround a compact courtyard. Each one bursts with a surfeit priceless antiques, bold ideas, breathtaking details, and some touches of true genius. The effect is overrich, but not without either taste or coherence.
The creator of this curious masterpiece is mostly Turan. He is a young man of very good looks, an intensity bordering on the manic, and a penchant for the grand gesture. To top it all, he brings in an impeccable schooling in world-class hotel management. He serves champagne and caviar in white knights attire, and dreams of grand coups de cuisine. Ms Sarıoğlu, who is Armenian, contributes a somewhat surer footing in the style and manners of the refined classes of the Old Levant.
There are calmer and more comfortable hotels in Cappadocia. But for sheer individuality of vision, this one is hard to beat.
