fter 50 years of loyal service shuttling between continents in Istanbul, the British-made SS Turan Emeksiz ferryboat was rescued and transformed into a floating hotel. The restoration was very successful: original materials were preserved, old frames and knobs cleaned up and polished. The aft deck, where commuters used to sit and throw crumbs at seagulls, is now a secluded terrace. The rooms offer a surprisingly high level of comfort. Instead of bunks, you sleep in goose down beds. The ceiling is a bit low but this, after all, is a modest ferry, not the Titanic. The heart of the beast, the machine room, is now a conference hall. In the successful restaurant, waiters wear sailors’ outfits. Bursa is only 15 min. away by car and you can get to Istanbul by fast ferryboat in less time than it takes to read the newspaper.
