A Mediterranean idyll designed with modesty and love, Ocakköy stands on a broad hillside hidden behind a pine forest, far away from the loud commercialism of the Fethiye and Ölüdeniz resorts. It is built around the ruins of a hamlet abandoned a century ago, with stone cottages that replicate the original village houses, surrounded by flower-filled patios and cultivated vegetable patches. Across the valley is the extraordinary panorama of Kayaköy's ghost town, glowing against the 2000-metre peak of the Babadağ. The postcard-perfect beach of Ölüdeniz lies 5 kms away.
The idea of Ocakköy was born 25 years ago when a handful of Germans and Englishmen - a businessman, a professor, a photographer and a ballet-dancer - met by chance in Ölüdeniz and were seized by "love at first sight". They resisted the logic of lower-end mass tourism, which has transformed the neighbouring villages from rustic backwater into boomtown. Part of the resort is set aside for handicapped guests, who can enjoy all of Ocakköy's facilities with ease. Most other guests are English. There are two swimming pools, several bars, and acres of uncluttered land to spread in.
