A
pretty old stone house in an effusive Mediterranean garden full of bright colours and scents. It stands right next to the greatest of the surviving monuments of Greek antiquity in Turkey, the Temple of Apollo at Didyma. At night, after the tour buses leave, you can slip secretly into the temple grounds to revel in the glory of the 2000-year old marble.
Mustafa is a dynamic local entrepreneur, always full of enthusiasm and projects. Ingrid is an educational officer in her native Germany. They share their life between the two countries, and serve a happy mixture of Turkish warmth and German sense of detail to a literate circle of guests from around the world. Their inn doubles up as the headquarters of a local Greek-Turkish friendship initiative.
The beach of Didim, sadly over-developed, lies 4 kms away. Far more interesting are the swamplands of the Küçükmenderes delta, where vast flocks of aquatic birds, including the pink flamingo, gather in winter.
