M ardius is by a long stretch the most elegant hotel in Mardin. If you can afford it, do stay there. With its warm people, charming markets, narrow alleys with stairs, donkeys and stunning stone buildings, Mardin has great appeal.

But when you see churches with no parishioners and monasteries without pupils, it makes you question the past. The hotel is in an old three-storey mansion, a superb example of the local architecture. Birol Ensari bought it in honor of his family, which owned it a century ago. He invested much effort and money into restoring it in exemplary fashion.

Staying in such surroundings is a real privilege. The restaurant overlooks the Mesopotamian plain, which stretches far into the distance. The food is good too. The only drawback: in line with the owners’ preference, no alcohol is served.
