F oreign tourists were the first to discover the haunting beauty of Mardin, Midyat and the villages of northern Mesopotamia. Television series have now put the region on the map for western Turks, who visit in greater numbers.

To accommodate this influx, local entrepreneurs are opening attractive new hotels. Kasr-ı Nehroz, at the heart of Midyat’s Assyrian quarter, is surrounded by millenia-old monasteries and churches. Its towers and arches bring to mind an ancient fortress, but it was successfully converted to a modern hotel . Wherever possible the old walls were left intact. Skillful artisans were called to add lace-like carvings to new stone. In the airy and modern rooms, colourful bedspreads contrast pleasantly with the dominant beige. In the cellar, you can enjoy a rare pleasure and taste Assyrian wines!
