L ocated on the banks of the Euphrates, Halfeti is one of the oldest villages of Anatolia, thought to have been founded by the Assyrians in 855 BC. During the Roman and Byzantian empires, it was an attractive border town, bearing different names over the centuries. When the new Birecik Dam was filled in 1999, half the village disappeared under the water, including the ancient city of Zeugma where magnificent mosaics were discovered. Visitors are attracted by the eerie vision of half-drowned buildings, a minaret emerging from the depths and a castle turned into an island, which trigger an emotional response. Halfeti has become a “Cittaslow” tourism destination. Kasr-ı Canan, one of the surviving traditional mansions, has been beautifully restored and turned into a well-equipped small hotel. It serves delicious regional dishes, some of them cooked with plums, figs or quince.
