K
ale, meaning castle, is a fitting name for this dwelling, built in a somber and imposing manner atop Capadoccia’s highest point. It is a stately affair inside and out. Everything is as it should be, dignified, well-ordered but surprisingly comfortable.
Perhaps the best thing about the Kale Konak is a little room at the top called the Grape Terrace. The grape terrace is a small but incredible thing – not unlike the grape itself, come to think of it. It’s the kind of room where an earnest young teacher, sent to Uchisar from the city a generation or two ago, might have boarded, preparing his lessons or writing letters to a not-quite-forgotten lover in the still night air. The furnishings are more luxurious then his would have been, of course – hip bathroom design, bookshelves and a single brass bed – but it still feels very much like the right place for leaving urban life behind for a bit, turning off the telephone and the computer and searching for a simpler side of life.
