H otel des Etrangers is the oldest hotel in Çanakkale. Old enough in fact to count Heinrich Schliemann, the archeologist who discovered and excavated the site of ancient Troy, among its early guests in 1868. The hotel was a French-run establishment. Has been closed many years ago. In 2006, it was bought by the Candan family, which spent four years renovating it. Last year, it finally reopened under the same name. Steel was added to strengthen the structure, but the original features, such as the handsome stone walls and the original sign written in French, Turkish and Greek, were salvaged. The decor in the rooms is in keeping with the spirit of this very nice hotel. The lobby, more modern, is equally inviting. We stayed here on a beautiful autumn day and ended up chatting with the friendly owners over a delicious meal until the early hours of the morning.
