T
he fortress at Ortahisar is among the weirdest historical remains left to mankind: a 5000 year-old cave apartment block! Hezen Cave Hotel, located right across from this magnificent structure, emerged last year as one of the most colourful hotels in Cappadocia.
Built for strategic purposes, the Ortahisar fortress was mainly used as a residence. People carved the rooms and added stairs rising to the top. The idea for the hotel came from Hasan Bey’s family. His father sells carpets in Ürgüp. They wanted something different. With the help of designers, they re-interpreted traditional furniture. By mixing traditional and contemporary, they obtained beautiful results. Cave houses can feel claustrophobic, but the right choice of colours here rules this out. What is most striking about staying in a cave house? No vibrations! Pay attention and you’ll feel the difference.
