A
yvalı (also called Aravan) is a small Cappadocian town hardly touched by the tourist hullabaloo of places like Ürgüp and Göreme. A fantastic gorge of ancient rock dwellings - some still inhabited - cuts across the town, unseen until one stumbles over it by chance. There are a couple of pensions, but no one yet who tries to sell you carpets or gewgaw. Yet the main tourist attractions are a 15-minute drive away.
Gamirasu occupies a stone "konak" and the neighbouring patchwork of rock cells built deep inside the gorge; it blends smoothly into the otherworldly landscape. (Some rooms appear to have been used as monks cells in the past.) It started out in 1999 with German ownership and a spiritual-holistic bent, although more traditional Turkish hospitality has meanwhile - and happily - taken over. The heart of the establishment is Mr Bastutan, a local man of immense personal charisma and an easy smile. His guestbook gushes with praise from guests from the four corners of the world.
