T he nicest village on Gökçeada is Eski Bademli, known in Greek as Gliki. From the hilltop, it commands a splendid view of the sea and Samotraki island.

Half abandoned for years, the village has enjoyed a revival in recent years as Greeks returned to fix their old properties and started spending their summers here. The village cafe, where Greek is spoken and the favourite radio station is Samotraki FM, now even stays open through winter.

"Son Vapur" - the last ferry - is also the name of Aret and Orkide Boğasyan's restaurant in the village centre. After coming and going from Istanbul for several years, they renovated this Greek stone house in traditional blue and white, turning it into a hotel.

The rooms are nicely furnished with antiques. The wonderful meals, enjoyed with the stunning view, draw on Greek, Armenian and Turkish culinary tradition.
