T
he small hill town of Üzümlü was known for its cool air and hand-woven cottons. And amongst connoisseurs, for the forest-engulfed ruins of ancient Cadyanda.
One day it was discovered by the purveyors of summer housing for the mildly adventurous classes of Britain and Germany. Several dozen ancient stone houses were hastily converted, and now Jill and Hans mingle easily in the weekly market with the şalvar-wearing peasants of the hill villages..
Further inland and up the mountain are the YESILUZUMLU DIKENCIK HOUSES, two stone cottages tucked away in the bush at the end of an unasphalted road. It's a great getaway-from-it-all, attractive self-catering apartments with soaring open rafters and big fireplaces.
Mr. Genç, an early retiree from urban life, did much of the building work himself.
The isolation does not mean you have to forego the comforts of the coast. There's a large pool in front of the houses which looks straight out over the trees. The décor mixes and matches Thai fabrics and old family photos to pleasing, if never designer, effect.
The hosts will happily show you the edible mushrooms and truffle-like fungi that grow unheeded amid the trees. They are also offering very delicious mushroom dishes.
