onguldak is not a holiday destination, but if you travel in the Black Sea region or happen to be in town, Bab-i Zer is by far the best hotel in the area. It is also a popular restaurant.
Perched on a cliff overlooking the sea, the hotel is superbly located. Stairs by the roadside lead to the water. The three-storey building is surrounded by lush lawns. It is a light-filled structure decorated in neo-classical style : quilted bed heads, gilded mirror frames, veiled four-poster beds and soft colours. The lighting is particularly successful. The rooms boast impressive sea views. Watching the sun rise from the sea provides a perfect way to start the day. The kitchen serves a rich selection. The emphasis is on fish, although steaks and stews are available. Bab-i Zer, incidentally, means Golden Gate.
