T
he Samanpazari and Kale districts of Ankara have little in common with the bureaucratic capital of Turkey. Crowded, colourful, friendly, they feel more like a picturesque old Anatolian village. One or two of Turkey's most handsome mosques can be found here, as well as an enticing antiques market. With the opening of the Çengelhan Rahmi M. Koç museum five years ago, this area has enjoyed a revival. The And Hotel is an old Anatolian mansion, extensively restored by the owners of the Kavaklıdere wineries. The Citadel overlooks its inner courtyard. The external work is nothing short of perfect. Overall, the interior is nicely done too: beautiful fabrics and pieces of furniture, clever ceiling details. The rooms marry the spirit of the past with present day comfort. The entrance and reception area could perhaps do with a bit more warmth and life.
