A
wonderful hotel in a wonderful little town that grew in a few years from sleepy backwater into a showcase of rediscovered country chic. Much credit for that sweeping transformation goes to Mrs Özis herself, who set the standards of style with her much-imitated hotel and the houses she designed. It is a style that is natural, simple, unaffected, yet unfailing in its command of colour and texture.
Like all other buildings in this historic town, Tas Otel ('Stone Hotel') is a sturdy old stone house in neo-classical Greek mould. The blue casements and milky-blue stairway, too, remind us the other coast of the Aegean more than this. Mrs Özis cut a high-powered marketing career short to follow a more personal calling in Alaçati. Her bright, girlish manner hides the clever businesswoman. She runs the hotel single-handedly: full marks go to her superb breakfast, her choice of bed sheets, her charming kitchen, her reading cabinet - not to mention the cool swimming pool set in a perfectly peaceful lawn.
