A
n enchanting place on the roadless north shore of Lake Bafa, where the old village of Kapıkırı blends with the ruins of Heracleia-by-Latmos.
An extinct volcano rises in the back, hiding the ruins of a dozen mediaeval monasteries in its folds. An islet bearing another Byzantine monastery faces the village beach.
It was here that Selene, the moon goddess, fell in love with the shepherd Endymion as he lay asleep by the shore. She asked Zeus to grant the youth perpetual sleep, and bore 50 children from their nightly encounters.
AGORA PENSION is the least primitive among a handful of rudimentary pensions that exist in the village. The original modest cabins were replaced with more comfortable modern rooms a few years ago.
Mr Serçin, formerly the village muhtar, runs the house with his wife and daughters, still full of eager and erratic hospitality after god knows how many years of operating a pension.
There is good fresh seafish from the fisheries of Dalyan, and hiking tours can be organised into the fantastic boulderlands of Beşparmak Mountain upon demand.
