T
he building, located in one of Beyoğlu’s prettiest roads, is breathtaking: a triumph of neo-classicism. Ceiling engravings are out of this world. A terrace room overlooks Haghi Sophia.
Kumbaracı is one of the latest, and most beautiful, streets in Beyoğlu to undergo urban refurbishment. Count Boneval, later known as Ahmet Pasha after he converted to Islam, once resided here. He was known for developing a new weapon, called Humbara, for the Ottoman army. More appropriately, a kumbara is also a piggy-bank and the street has become Beyoğlu’s cultural treasure trove, with a theatre, a puppet maker, a repair shop for antiques, two hotels and several good restaurants. The hotel, elegantly restored, is close to Istiklal. The Italian restaurant just below, Morro, serves delicious pizzas. Rooms are elegant, comfortable and functional.
